Opportunities for Studying in Japan

On Thursday, April 10, 2024, a presentation about study opportunities in Japan took place in the Main Hall of the Polytechnic Campus. The event was organized by the Internationalization Commission of the UFPR Technology Sector in conjunction with the Consulate-General of Japan in Curitiba, which is responsible for promoting higher education in Japan.

The talk focused on the processes for study programs offered to Brazilians by the Japanese government, specifically the upcoming call for the MEXT scholarship. This opportunity, offered by the Japanese government, provides Brazilian students with full scholarships (round-trip airfare and a monthly stipend for the duration of the course) for undergraduate and doctoral levels in various fields.

It’s worth noting that the MEXT program has annual openings and applications generally begin in April each year.

Applications are open until June 2024, and travel abroad is scheduled for April 2025. Among the topics discussed, the six types of scholarships offered were presented:

  • Research (Postgraduate)
  • Undergraduate
  • College of Technology
  • Specialized Training College
  • Teacher Training
  • Japanese Language and Culture

For the application process, the following steps must be followed:

  • Submit the necessary documentation to the Consulate.
  • Attach a simple translation to any and all documents in Portuguese; certified translation is not required.
  • All necessary documents can be found on the website of the Consulate-General of Japan in Curitiba. It is advised that a minimum of an intermediate level of the language is required to apply for the scholarship.

Once the application phase is complete, the selection process begins, which is divided into two stages:

The first consists of an evaluation of the submitted documentation, a written test that assesses language proficiency, and finally, an interview with those responsible for the scholarship. After this stage, the candidate will receive the result (approved or not). If approved, the second stage begins. In this stage, the candidate can select a maximum of two universities they would like to attend to try to obtain an acceptance letter. If successful, they only need to complete the necessary documentation and prepare for their exchange.

The presentation ended with students asking questions to the speaker and receiving some other advice for the process. If you are curious and would like to know more about this opportunity, just click the MEXT Scholarship link to learn more.

The international commission team of the Technology sector congratulates the organizing team and thanks all those who attended.
